How Deep is Boulby Mine?

Our mine here at ICL UK is the deepest mine in the UK and the second deepest mine in Europe. It takes around seven minutes to be taken to the bottom of the mine in the man shaft elevator, and the temperature reaches highs of 40 degrees. The mine acts as a great host for STFC‘s dark matter science projects because there’s virtually no background radiation that far beneath the Earth’s surface. So, how deep is the mine?

The potash, salt and Polysulphate™ we mine here at ICL UK has been ‘in the making’ for over 225 million years. Travelling down to the mine’s deepest point is like a walk through geological history. Boulby Mine is between 1,100 metres and 1,400 metres deep – that’s over 4 Eiffel Towers stacked on top of one another!
