Bowled over by Boulby donation

Even the temperature on the hottest day ever recorded in the UK the other week didn’t prevent our Technical Area Sales manager Craig Lalley from being out and about in our local communities.

He was visiting Skelton Bowling Club to donate some fertilizer and a treatment aimed at improving and maintaining the green sward vital to a proper game of competitive bowls.

“I’ve brought two bags of Greenmaster Pro-lite which will be used for an autumn feed,” said Craig. “I’ve also had a good chat to make sure they know how to get the best out of the product by a correct application.”

The donation was from our Community Fund. We were also delighted to approve another element of the application request – for a quality roller to keep the green in tip top condition.

“All members of the club are absolutely delighted at the support we’ve received from ICL Boulby,” said committee member Graham Clarke. “It was our centenary in 2020 but we couldn’t celebrate it because of COVID. But now we’re back up and running.”

The club has even managed to enrol a number of new members, among them is local woman Anna Rawlings who has arthritis and is not, shall we say, in the first flush of youth. During the worst part of the pandemic she was housebound and felt isolated. But she’s now a regular at the club. “It’s not just the bowling, there are there are social events too. My mental and physical health have got much better and I can just come along here and sit. It’s easy to make friends here and it’s somewhere I can’t live without now.”

It’s run by volunteers who have to raise around £2,000 a year to maintain the grounds and keep the club running. Among them are these four men who all used to work at Boulby until retiring with over 100 years of service behind them.

The club would love to hear from prospective new members. Meet the members and see what the club has to offer by contacting Graham Clarke.
