Exploring the World of Mining: Solomon Youngs

Solomon Youngs, a bright 15-year-old student from Huntcliff School, recently embarked on an exciting works experience at Boulby Mine.

Soloman initially joined the business to gain work experience in Sales, Marketing, and Logistics. However, his journey took an unexpected turn when he was given the opportunity to explore various other areas within the company.

From Mining to Engineering and Geology, he delved into diverse fields, broadening his knowledge and skills along the way. “What I’ve taken away from my week at ICL is that there are so many different careers out there and so many ways of getting to where you want to go,” he reflected. Surprisingly, he even got the chance to explore the mysterious realm of Dark Matter, showcasing his adaptability and eagerness to learn beyond his initial scope. Soloman’s experience serves as a testament to the value of seizing unexpected opportunities and embracing new challenges in the professional world.

“I’ve really enjoyed my work experience with ICL. I didn’t realise that I would get to meet so many people in so many different jobs. Everyone has been so friendly and taken the time to show me what they do and how it fits into the business,” he expressed.

Vice President and General Manager of Boulby Mine and Teesdock, Grahame Wallace, emphasised the significance of providing such hands-on experiences to young individuals like Solomon. “It is crucial to expose the younger generation to the diverse facets of the mining industry. By offering them a chance to immerse themselves in different departments, we not only help them discover their interests but also pave the way for the future of our industry.”

Solomon’s journey at Boulby Mine not only broadened his understanding of the mining sector but also inspired him to consider a potential career in the industry.
