Tom Brown’s 238k Rowing Challenge for RNLI

On December 16th 2023, during a routine rowing practice, Tom Brown and Emma Cassie capsized just outside Whitby harbour, leaving them in the water with only life jackets to keep them afloat whilst they clung helplessly to their upturned boat. The tragedy was averted thanks to the quick response of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Without their intervention, the outcome could have turned out very differently.

RNLI to the rescue!

To show his appreciation for the RNLI, Tom challenged himself to raise vital funds and awareness for their incredible work, rowing 238k, one kilometer for every lifeboat station in the UK and Ireland. This is no small feat, but it pales in comparison to the bravery and dedication of the RNLI volunteers who risk their lives to save others.

Family Ties and a Call to Action for the RNLI

At Boulby Mine, we have a connection to the RNLI through continued support, and the experiences of our employees and their loved ones.

Tom, the son of Ian Brown, our Mechanical Operations Engineer (Mining), and Emma, the partner of our Project Manager, Nick Cook, share a deep appreciation for the RNLI after this harrowing ordeal. Tom has also worked with our Geology department in the past and plans to return for a project later this year.
